Mardi Gras in Baton Rouge Louisiana

Mardi Gras, Party Party Party

When you hear of Mardi Gras you usually think New Orleans.  However, for those of you not native to Louisiana, it may come as a surprise to learn that most of the major cities have parades.  Now Mardi Gras is not just a parade, but a series of parades starting the first weekend in February and culminating with final parades and the crowning of a King and Queen on Mardi Gras Day which is Feb. 24th this year.  You will find many colorful parades.  Many have themes that vary from year to year.

Parades in Baton Rouge aremuch more family friendly and not as risque, with the exception of the wild and wacky Spanish Town Parade.

Here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, one of the favorites is The Mystic Krewe of Mutts.  Krewe of Mutts Mardi Gras Parade, Sun.Feb.15 10mThat's a parade of dogs.  Dog owners dress their favorite dog in colorful costume and parade in downtown.

Krewe of Orion theme this year is Tour de France, WBRZ Video..

The Spanish Town parade is one of the more famous and goes thru one of the oldes historic area of the city.  This one usually features flamingos in some other theme that varies year to year.  This year's theme:  Buy Yeaux Bailout.

Visit Baton Rouge has  videos of all the parades that captures some of the flavor.

Ann, I think the Mardi Gras would be so much fun. My husband has been years ago, and remembers it being very "festive." ;-)

A whole series of parades - how nice!  Bet the dog parade is hysterical!

The Parade of Mutts sounds like so much fun!  But so does all of Mardi Gras.  I was in NO for national Association of Realtors Conference and loved it.  We have some friends down there, too and would love to go visit them again some time!

Teri,  Mardi Gras is fun.  Here in Baton Rouge various Krewe's have parade routes thru many of the neighborhoods which makes it fun.  They are not all downtown.  Before I lived here I thought "how can anyone get excited about catching beads off a float?" .  But there's something about it...the competition of jumping up and catching them before anyone else that makes it like a game!  Some come away wearing many, many around their neck.

Eileen, I like the Mystic Krewe of Mutts.  Fun to have the dogs involved.

Debra,  I was in NOLA for the National Association of Realtors Conference too.  That was right after Katrina's recovery and the city was still pretty devistated.  Not fully recovered yet!  The parade was very short compared to the actual ones that wander all thru the city streets.  But it did give a taste of the flavor!  I still have a picture of myself and my Realtor friend from California in our NardiGras shirts!  I still wear mine.

Ann, we were thinking about going home to Louisiana (Lake Charles) this next weekend to enjoy some of the Mardi Gras Festivities.  But ended up helping plan a Mardi Gras Party (for The Woman's Club of San Antonio) at the beautiful Woodward House, here in San Antonio.  We do have a small Mardi Gras Parade on the River (Riverwalk) each year.  I'll miss it this year -- we'll be cooking -- menu includes Jambalaya (my husband & I are making it), Bread Pudding (I'm making it), Shrimp Etouffee (another couple is making it), and King Cake (of course).  We've also booked a Jazz Quartet for entertainment and dancing later in the evening.  Looking forward to it.

Hi Ann.....I missed that one but was in NOLA for the National Association of Realtors annual conference prior to Katrina.  It really is such a great place!

Joseph,  You do miss a lot of fun during Mardi Gras month if you're not here. (Don't like all the traffic jams trying to get around and show houses)

Debra, If you get this way again, you'll have to look me up for a lunch or dinner.

Judi, Ah, my friend, sounds like you are making the best of not being here!  If you can't come home, bring home where you are.  Occasionally I drag out my cowboy boots and hat, but there aren't too many cowgirls here!  And the food, I much prefer chicken fried steak to etouffe and jambalaya.  :-)

Ann, yep, couldn't get home to Louisiana to celebrate Mardi Gras with the family there -- so created my own Mardi Gras Party here!!!  I'll post pictures early next week.  We're really excited about it -- have almost 80 people attending.  Lots of good Louisiana food, drinks and desserts, great Jazz music and even a LIVE Auction.  It's a fun fundraiser for The Woman's Club of San Antonio.  :)

Laissez les bons temps rouler!!!
